Sound, Oh Lovely Sound!

Well I finally have persuaded Ubuntu Dapper to give me sound. After delving around in the depths of the Ubuntu forums, I finally found a thread where someone had realised the issue was a faulty sound module in the Ubuntu default kernels. One roll your own kernel later, and here I am with sound! As I type, I’m blasting out some Sigur Rós in celebration!

The thread cunningly linked to another thread about optimising your kernel, and I have to say the improvement on boot up is certainly noticeable. Mind you, Ubuntu never seemed to recognise I had a Pentium 4, and insisted on using a 386 kernel…

I’ve not compiled a kernel for years – probably around 1998/1999 when I first started using Linux I would diligently redo my kernel for every new release, although that didn’t last very long given I always used to cock it up and break something. Indeed I’m now half expecting printing or networking to have mysteriously disappeared…

Anyway, if it has, well we will see. But for now, perhaps you’d care to join me in a quick blast of Sigur’s Hoppípolla. All together now…
