"So what would happen if Radio 1 was privatised and the FM network licenced to a commercial radio company to create an FM pop network. Firstly it would not be editorially identical to Radio 1. The new music, sessions, and expensive PSB content would largely disappear – no shareholder would support such expenditure at the level sustained by the BBC from licence fee funding. Secondly the presenter talent would be decimated…Chris Moyles would be fired. No commercial radio company would permit him the editorial scope he has at the BBC. You might say good thing too – but that is to miss the point. Presenters on the BBC can take risks to an extent that is impossible in the commercial world, and that is part of their public purpose."
